Welcome to Windsong's Words & Blurbs Blog

Hello Windsong Ward Members and WELCOME to our Blog. We are going to try out a ward blog. This, if it works properly, will offer many different things to you as friends and ward members. Ideally, we will have a ward calender, a section for all auxillaries to promote activites, thoughts, service opprotunites and anything else that needs to be shared with the ward members. For example: for Relief Society we want to have the calendar, Relief Society Mini Groups listed with information for anyone wanting to participate in these groups. The visiting teaching message for the month will be available. We would like to have a Home Preparedness section where the newsletter, recipes, cannery informatione etc will be available to everyone. We are hoping to provide a central place where anyone who is interested can go to get information about upcoming events, ward news, serving missionaries addresses or news from them, communtiy service news and opprotunities... We are open to suggestions and look forward to hearing feedback that you may have to offer for how we can make this a successful concept.

"Hands on" Emergency Preparedness Group

We would like to form a "hands-on" group for emergency preparedness. Rather than having a class with an instructor, we would like to help each other accomplish home emergency preparedness.
Topics which have come to mind are:
1. Assembling 72- hour kits-- bring your own materials and assemble them together during the meeting(also sharing ideas of where we can get bulk items at a reduced rate)
2. getting the canner from the home storage center, and bring items to can
3. search for/bring to the group recipes on using your home storage items (recipes you've tried)-- if they are brought on cards, they could be assembled on a ring
4. alternate heating/cooking sources- assemble/make your own heating source together as a group
5. planning for a pendemic- what we need to assemble- where to get the items.
each group would involve teaching each other and becoming involved in DOING something with what we learn.
These are only suggestions-- If you have any ideas, please send them to me and we'll share them!
Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Roxanne Blackman's. Reminders will be sent out. Please sign up in the R.S. Sunday binders if you are interested.

Catholic Family & Child Services
We could use donations of gently used baby & toddler furniture, equipment &toys to help new foster families to get set up, as well as household furnishings for foster teens who "age out' of care at age 18. After age 18, there is a program called Foster Care to College Mentoring and it's purpose is to match mentors with foster youth who are planning to go to college. Volunteers are needed.
We try to encourage foster families to keep up with turning in paper work (a necessary but monotonous procedure) by holding a monthly raffle. Families get a ticket for each item of paperwork that they submit. If anyone has something to contribute, it would be very helpful (we don’t have a budget for purchasing prizes). An extra special idea would be to offer the use of a vacation home/time share to a family with extraordinary circumstance, subject to the discretion of the donor.

Something has come us via President Stryckerof the Branch. He has learned of a sister to a young lady in the branch who is living in Mozambique, Africa. She has shared the needs of some of the branch there and also the community of Maputo. The Branch wants to do something to help and he was wondering if the rest of the stake might want to get in on it.
There is a great need in Mozambique --especially in the branch --for basic things. Mostly they need clothes and food. Carla suggested powdered milk, any dry or canned foods. Beans, rice, etc. There is a huge need for shoes. Mozambique is very dirty. People have to walk through garbage and filth everywhere. There are no sanitary facilities or running water in the areas that most people live. So people relieve themselves on the sides of the road, next to shanty homes, in the walk ways. Flip flops do not protect ones feet from the filth and disease that they have to walk through. (these people do not have cars, some of them walk 2-3 hours to come to church).
NEEDS:
1.Food, Soap
dry beans, rice, sugar, powdered milk, anything boxed or canned.
2.Clothes
Shirts, pants, underwear for men, women and children (including
infants). Church clothes as well.
3.Shoes and socks
Full coverage footwear that will protect ones feet from whatever
is on the ground
4.School Supplies
Crayons, pens, pencils, paper --BASICS....nothing fancy please
5.Toys
Not plush, Plastic toys that are durable and easy to clean.
Of course we will distribute whatever you send and everyone will be very grateful. We would like to do this as a holiday gift-but due to the location and shipping involved we need to act immediately.
